Go-to Morning Drinks…

What’s yours?

We all have our own way of getting our day started. For some of us, that requires our go-to morning drinks. It is often said that many cannot get their day started without an iced coffee, but that is not the case for everyone. We asked some fellow Sunbirds “What is your go-to drink in the morning?” Below is what they said:

“Protein Shake, one banana, 2 scoops of protein” Jesse Franco said.

“Water” David Simon said.

“3 shots of Espresso straight-up” Maesyn Rix said.

“Um I honestly forget to drink things” Hope Erwin said.

“Water. I don’t drink coffee” Ayden Merrihew said.

“Water or Chocolate Milk. That’s my go-to.” Alejandro Mendibles said.

“If I workout then pre-workout and if not then tea” Anastassiya Barakhoyeva said.

“Iced chai with soy milk” Mel Munoz said.

“Water first then an energy drink” Sophie Underwood said.

“Water” Ciana Rivera said.

“Water” Amaia Rivera said.

“Water if I have practice, if not a simple coffee” Tori De Leon said.

“Water” Vanessa Cochrane said.

“Water” Nayeli Flores said.

Based on the majority of their answers, water is the most popular go-to drink to start their day! No one can ever go wrong with a classic cup of water.

The Song of Achilles

Author: Madeline Miller

It would be safe to assume many of us in high school most likely read some sort of Greek mythology book, like The Iliad or The Odyssey. It can also be assumed that many of us struggled with engaging with the books and simply read them because they were required for a class. However, Madeline Miller takes these famous Greek mythology characters and creates a powerful and emotional love story between Achilles and Patroclus. Throughout the book, Miller focuses on the Trojan War and the struggles Achilles and Patroclus face in their relationship and friendship throughout the war. However, will their relationship be enough to get them through the war? Or, will sacrifices have to be made? #patrochilles #songofachilles

The Spanish Love Deception

Author: Elena Armas

Are you interested in a romance novel that is possibly more cheesy than a Hallmark movie? Then, Elena Armas’s novel is the perfect match for you. Armas tells the story of Lina and  her lie to  her family about having a boyfriend. This turns into a huge problem, because Lina must find a fake boyfriend to take to her sister’s wedding.  However, when her despised enemy from work, Aaron Blackford, offers to be her fake boyfriend, Lina is torn between going to the wedding alone embarrassingly or going with her ultimate enemy. The question remains: what will Lina do and is Aaron Blackford as bad as she thinks he is? #aaronblackford #enemiestolovers #spicybook

Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe

Author: Benjamin Alire Sáenz

This novel is a great story about self discovery, acceptance, and family secrets. You will follow Dante and Aristotle, two boys that struggle accepting themselves in similar yet different ways. Behind the coming of age theme that is present throughout the novel, a mystery looms. What happened to Aristotle’s brother? Why does his dad refuse to talk about him? Both  questions will be answered in a satisfying manner. Additionally, this book grapples with heavy issues such as accepting one’s sexuality, coming to terms with not “fitting in” to one’s culture, and mending strained family relationships.

All the Light we Cannot See

Author: Anthony Doerr

World War I and II are a common subject to write about in fictional novels, yet this story stands out from the others despite the prevalent  theme. For example, this story follows three young people who are affected by the German invasion in France. All of these characters have intriguing aspects to their story such as dealing with blindness, indoctrination, and the efforts involved in hindering Nazi goals. In addition to the exploration of each character’s issues, a mysterious artifact is being hunted by Germans. Who has the real copy of the “Sea of Flames?” What is so important about this artifact, and what are people willing to do to possess it?

The Struggles International Students Face at FPU

A deeper look into the college life of international students

Fresno Pacific University has a large International-Student population. Several international students are athletes, so they come for an opportunity to play their sport all the while receiving an education in America. Many come to California with the anticipation and vision in their head that Fresno, California will be just like what they have seen in the movies. The reality of Fresno is that it is a small town with a lot of surrounding agriculture. Fresno, as many of us local citizens can agree, is not Hollywood, San Francisco, or what you see in the movies. Many international students become disappointed when they realize Fresno and FPU are not what is in the movies, or what they imagined California and college life to be like. However, many of our international students still take this opportunity and attempt to make the most of it.

Being a senior at FPU, I am close friends with a handful of international students. Through these friendships, I have realized the struggles they face while attending FPU. Many international students experience difficulty  with finding rides off campus for basic needs like doctor appointments or groceries.

Being a commuter with access to  a car, I can attest to seeing the struggles my international friends face. Most times, I am their main mode of transportation. I offer them rides for basic necessities, like groceries and errands, or social events, like hiking and beach trips.By all means, I provide these experiences and opportunities to my international friends out of the kindness of my heart. However, not every international student at FPU has a friend with a car to provide rides. Another issue that sometimes  arises is availability for rides. I do  work and I have other commitments, so I am not always available to provide rides to my friends.

The struggles that international students face when coming to FPU and America are real and have not been brought to light. International students make up a large population of FPU’s student body, and the resources given to these students is limited, especially now with COVID-19 protocols.

When talking to some international students, many of them explained how Campus Safety was the main resource they used for rides off campus. However, with COVID-19, most of those services have been suspended. Below are quotes from international students who thank and appreciate the help that Campus Safety has given them in years past, but still express frustration with this service being currently  suspended.

“Most of the time, I was calling Campus Safety to ask for a ride to the airport, and they were very nice and available to me. Same thing when I asked for being picked up from the airport,” Senior Alice Di Matteo said.

“Campus safety helped me a lot. I sometimes called them to drop me off at Walmart or pick me up when I could not afford Uber. Most of the time they are available, but these past weeks because of Covid, they were not allowed to drive us.” Junior Lea Falentin said.

“Campus Safety used to be able to offer rides to Walmart but there are not doing it anymore so now I feel that FPU doesn’t help in any way,” Junior Alice Marques said.

International students also expressed another struggle. Finding  a vehicle is not their main conflict. They must plan in advance with a friend who has a car to go to the store and buy groceries. For those who do not have a friend who can provide a ride, they must resort to Uber or Lyft. Below are quotes from international students who have experienced this first hand.

“FPU is far from any of the big groceries’ stores like Walmart for example and every week I need to do groceries and what I do is to ask a friend to drive me there but when I can’t find anyone available to drive me, I have to get an Uber which is expensive, and this is the most challenging part about not having a car,” Junior Alice Marques said.

“It is a real struggle not having transportation here. For example, just the fact to go get groceries is complicated because I have to get an Uber for the way to go and to go back. It costs me a lot of money not having transportation here because I have to spend it on uber.” Junior Lea Falentin said.

“When we want to do groceries, we need to make sure we plan it ahead and find someone that is willing to drive us. If there would be more stores or restaurants around campus it would definitely be easier,” First-year Graduate student Sanne Brull said.

The international students mentioned how COVID-19 restrictions have made transportation much more difficult to access. Brull explained how in years past The International Office used to organize events to help students with transportation. However,  due to COVID-19, those services are not offered. The pandemic has been ongoing for two years, and as a result,  international students are struggling on FPU campus.

Another difficulty international students have come across is the idea of college life and experiencing things outside of campus. From my personal experience with my international friends, I have made it a point to invite my friends off campus to experience new parts of Fresno and California. College is most definitely about education, but students can also have fun with friends. The international students that were interviewed explained how it is difficult to leave campus even if it is only for a day trip or on weekends. Below are quotes from international students who expressed their feelings about not being able to leave campus for fun social activities or trips.

“It is also complicated to go out of campus because most of the cool stuff is far away, and sometimes I feel like I am stuck here,” Junior Lea Falentin said.

“Sometimes it can be hard to find a way to leave campus, especially on the weekends,” Graduate student Sanne Brull said.

The struggles that FPU international students encounter are not at the fault of FPU alone. COVID-19, over the last two years, has played a big part in these struggles. I care about the college experience and accessibilities for my international friends and other international students.  Just as I am able to get the full college experience with access to a vehicle for my daily needs, so should international students. The difficulties international students face are legitimate, and as a student on campus who sees the struggle first hand through my friends, I feel obligated to speak on this matter and encourage change to happen for my international friends.

Due to the many restrictions and difficulties the ongoing pandemic has placed on everyone, I look forward to new opportunities and accessibilities FPU will offer to its international students.

Birds for Pride Demonstration

Why the March Was Necessary to Raise Awareness

On March 16th, students and local religious leaders joined forces in a demonstration organized by Birds for Pride. This event passed through the FPU campus in hopes of garnering awareness to the unjust denial of a formal pride club being allowed on FPU’s campus. The thing that elevated the stakes for a call to action was that the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC), FPU’s accreditation agency, was in town and had representatives on campus. The march was much more than just another showing of unity, it was a move to bring justice to FPU in front of those in charge of bringing accountability to the school. A petition from Faithful America with over 11,000 signatures also paints the picture a little more clearly; Let the LGBTQ+ community feel like they are seen and recognized at FPU.

This, of course, is not the first time Birds for Pride have put pressure on the powers above at FPU. It all stems from FPU’s rejection of a pride club on campus, something that sparked a reaction across the FPU campus and the community around it. Cries of discrimination and censorship soon led to unity within the LGBTQ+ community at FPU in an effort to try and raise awareness to the outright open discrimination they recieved. This community was promised a safe space on campus, however, instead they received a cold shoulder without a plausible explanation.

Fast forward from the beginning of Fall semester 2021 to Spring semester in March in 2022, things have not changed as FPU continues its stance against the formation of a pride club on campus. It is worth noting that many religious leaders around the community, students at FPU, SGA approval, as well as staff members were supporting the movement to finally create a pride club on campus and be among some of the other faith-based universities around the country to open their doors to an LGBTQ+ club. However, despite their best efforts, the Birds for Pride still have not gotten their chance to be recognized as a formal club on campus. Now, more than ever, it is critical to give voice and hope to members of the LGBTQ+ community after Florida and Texas received backlash recently for their anti-LGBTQ+ measures. If FPU is a safe space for all people, why is there a continued pattern of marginalization towards a community that is constantly being silenced?

To further understand the reason behind the demonstration as well as get some more information to FPU students who are unaware, the Syrinx has decided to interview Justin St. George, FPU senior, US navy veteran, and club president of Birds for Pride.

Why did the pride club choose to have a demonstration/walk out?

“We chose a peaceful demonstration during the accreditation team onsite visit to emphasize the need for WASC to investigate Fresno Pacific University’s diversity and inclusion practices. Earlier this year, we filed a formal complaint with WASC, which was also signed by the SGA President (attached). President Joseph Jones time and time again refused to speak with LGBTQ+ students and even attempted to obstruct the student body and faculty over the last year. He ignored student feedback at a student leadership retreat, censored the decision-making of the Student Government Association and The Syrinx student newspaper, refused to forward our paperwork to the Board of Trustees, sent a cease-and-desist email to the University’s own Diversity Committee, and plagiarized our club recognition form by implementing ‘safe space persons’ policy. President Jones has caused irrevocable damage by leading with his cognitive bias, and not his Christian values. He has endangered the standing of the Central Valley’s only accredited Christian institution and has exposed the school to potential financial and legal liabilities.”

What are you trying to achieve by raising awareness?

“A lot of students are unaware that Fresno Pacific University openly and actively discriminates against LGBTQ+ individuals. FPU is not a safe place for LGBTQ+ students, many feel not comfortable being themselves. Well-qualified students, faculty, and alumni have been turned down job and leadership opportunities because they identified openly as LGBTQ+. We have heard and will continue to hear from students and alumni across decades that have been traumatized by FPU’s diversity and inclusion policies. LGBTQ+ students are not allowed to have a club when it is Student Government approved, yet the school approves and funds a racist, white nationalist club like Turning Point USA. We are hoping WASC considers these circumstances, hears our message, and will listen to the 11,000+ voices that were handed to them thanks to a petition from Faithful America.”

Who were you trying to send the message of unity and strength too?

“LGBTQ+ students and Veterans should not be afraid to be themselves on campus. I served this country so those who chose not to serve, could live free and happy lives. We are called by our faith to love and support all people, but that is simply not happening at Fresno Pacific University.”

Furthermore, the Syrinx also decided to interview Cheyenne Cade, a junior majoring in Business Management at FPU, who was one of the students part of the Birds for Pride peaceful demonstration.

What made you join the demonstration along with the Birds for Pride club?

“I decided to join the pride club in their demonstration because I believe in equal treatment of all people despite their sexual preferences or identification.”

Why was their message important to get out there?

“The message is important because equality is important. The LGBTQ+ community deserves to have a safe place not only on campus but in the community.”

What do you hope happens in response to this? Whether it be a response by FPU officials or students on campus?

“What I hope to happen is that FPU decides to open their minds and eventually their hearts to the harm they are causing their student body. FPU wants to help the community but they need to start in their own backyard. How does the school expect to be respected when the school doesn’t respect the students and who they are as people? I joined the protest with love and kindness in my heart, hoping FPU can return the favor.”

In the end, it is clear that despite all that is thrown their way, the Birds for Pride will continue to push and hope for a better outcome than what they have been given. It is a testament to how strong the LGBTQ+ community is, and also a symbol of what this school is said to represent, hope.

The Batman Movie Review

Non-spoiler movie review of Robert Patterson’s newest movie The Batman!

Robert Patterson received lots of criticism when he was cast as Batman. Many thought he could not perform the role. Additionally, his role as Edward in Twilight played a role in the criticism. Some people did not like the idea of him playing Batman for that reason. Overall, D.C’s movies have rarely lived up to their hype due to them being poorly written. As a result of this, a lot of people believed it was going to be good while others believed it was going to flop. On the Rotten Tomatoes website, the audience score was 88%. However, I personally would have given it a 90% because it felt like it was missing something.
This movie is different compared to other superhero movies, as it had a serious tone. It has a slow start, but the movie keeps you engaged the whole time. The plot was written perfectly and I cannot complain about anything there. It had great riddles, as the audience tried to figure them out as the movie played. Also, it had good action sequences. More importantly, however, the main figure was Batman, because he was in every scene. Robert Patterson played a great performance, and he really showcased that he can do this role. It was interesting that they censored some scenes that may have been too graphic. This was done in order to keep it PG-13, but it was good they included some scenes, because it gave the movie more depth. Finally, I think the only thing that was missing was the Bruce Wayne side in this movie, although it is called The Batman.

Mock Rock 2022

A description of the event and an interview with the winner!

Mock Rock was an incredible event in which students showed off their lip-syncing and dancing abilities. The event involved both individual and group performances. From performing an entire storyline based on Olivia Rodrigo’s “Driver’s License,” to coming out of the stage and throwing wigs at the audience, the performances varied. All participants gave an amazing performance, but only one person took home the cash prize!

The Mock Rock winner was the “21st Century Pirate,” otherwise known as Jesus Alexander Gomez. He performed “Dance Apocalyptic” by Janelle Monáe. Jesus wanted to perform this song since his sophomore year in high school, but he decided that this year, at FPU, was the right time. Considering the state of the world, Jesus wanted to perform a song that gave off the idea of “dancing until the end.” Overall, it took Jesus about three weeks to practice for the performance. The process involved settling on a song, practicing in front of a mirror, and sending videos to his friends for feedback. Given the fact that he created the entire performance himself, it is impressive that it only took him three weeks to nail the performance onstage!

During the performance, audience members commented that Jesus gave off Johnny Depp vibes. Despite the fact that he may have given off that impression to the audience, he was not actually inspired by Johnny Depp’s “Jack Sparrow.” In fact, Jesus was thinking of a “future anarchist” when building his persona. When I mentioned to him that he gave off “V for Vendetta” vibes, Jesus admitted that he was inspired by the character. Ultimately, however, Jesus’s character was an original persona rather than an imitation.

Moving on from his performance, it was announced that the contestants were competing for $400. So, what is Jesus planning to spend his money on? Like many other people, Jesus loves iced coffee, iced tea, and boba. As a college student, he can not really afford that all the time, so he is planning on taking advantage of the money to treat himself.

Besides the monetary prize, Jesus had the desire to participate in Mock Rock since his freshman year at FPU. He loves to perform, but he had not performed for six years before the event. As a result, he felt like he would have regretted not performing at the event. This performance, however, will likely not be the end of the “21st Century Pirate.” Although he did not give much detail, Jesus hinted at possibly incorporating this persona into other works, such as a character in a novel!

4 Reasons Why The Zombie Apocalypse Would Not Be Fun!

A short rant inspired by a text conversation!

Recently, I had a conversation with a friend in which she casually mentioned that the zombie apocalypse would be fun. To be specific, she expressed that she would like to have some fun before the end. Besides saying this as if it was a completely normal opinion, she was surprised I did not agree with her. Of course, a zombie apocalypse would be fun! Who would not want to be chased by dead people? Well, in case you need rationale, allow me to explain the many reasons why the zombie apocalypse would rank on the bottom of your “fun things to do this summer” list!

  1. The smell

Ahhh, do you not love the smell of rotting bodies, unwashed people, and bad breath? Oh, you do not? For further explanations, I imagine it would be difficult to keep yourself clean in an event in which people are out to eat you! Specifically, an apocalypse implies the fact that the majority of humanity has been infected. If that were the case, production of all goods would surely come to a screeching halt. Therefore, you can forget your toothpaste, deodorant, and frequent showers!

  1. The lack of food

As stated in the hygiene section, production of all goods would essentially stop. This means you can forget about eating fresh food, if you can find any at all, for the foreseeable future! Of course, any food that is left in stores or houses would be fought over by everyone. Do you remember what happened in the pandemic with toilet paper? Now, imagine if something you absolutely needed to survive was running out! Ooof, good luck not starving to death or getting killed among food scarcity and people fighting over what is left.

  1. The lack of internet

Let us face it: we can not live without the internet anymore. Whether it provides entertainment, tools, or information, the internet is an essential part of our lives that we can not go without. Admittedly, you might not even have time to be bored when you are running for your life. Despite that, you will surely miss the conveniences that the internet brings. One great example of this would be maps, which many young people, myself included, do not know how to use. Unfortunately, google maps will not be telling you where the best spots to hide are. Instead, you will have to figure everything out on your own, and hope you do not make a mistake that costs you your life!

  1. Running for your life

If you have ever seen a zombie movie, you know that zombies will constantly be hunting you. If you have zero self-defense skills, you can kiss your life goodbye! Even with self-defense skills, however, there will come a point in which you can no longer defend yourself. Whether you are weak due to starvation or old age, there will come a point in which zombies will likely kill you. Now, try living a happy life knowing you can die any day if you do not find food, water, or become too weak to defend yourself!

Athletes Giving Back

Athletes share their experience giving back to the community

Fresno Pacific athletes have shown hard work on the field and on the court. These same athletes have shown hard work in their community as well. Fresno Pacific would like to recognize student athletes who have volunteered with their teams and given back to the community. Some volunteer work from Fresno Pacific athletes include clothing drives, serving food to the less fortunate, and keeping their community clean. The athletes recognized share their experiences below.

Junior Womens’ Basketball Felicia Dourva, Major: Business

“I enjoyed talking to the elderly of the Community and hearing stories about their experiences in Life. It was very Eye opening to hear some of their thoughts and experiences throughout Life. I also enjoyed volunteering at the foodbank and feeling like I was making a difference in someone’s Life by providing them with food on the table. Exactly what I did was keep some of the residents of Twilight Haven Company (this was in 2019 and 2020 before COVID) and since then I have just been going to the California food bank with the team to pack up food items for families in need. I also Went to a preschool a couple of times and played sports with the kids. I personally enjoyed the conversations with the kids the most.”

“I felt great and fulfilled because I was doing something that mattered to help the Community.”

Sophomore Womens’ Basketball Lindsey Moody, Major: Business

“We did two main things last semester, packing boxes at the local food bank and volunteering at Saturday Sports. It’s easy to enjoy volunteering when your team helps make it fun. When we are at Saturday sports we are playing with elementary aged kids, which is always a good time. And when we are at the food bank the competitiveness of our team really comes out and we are racing to see who can make better boxes and stuff the food in faster. But, I think the thing I enjoyed the most was being able to make an impact on the local community with my team.”

“It feels great being a part of a team that cares about giving back to the community that we are located in. Like I said earlier it’s easy to enjoy volunteering when your team makes it fun. Our team also has a saying to be relentlessly pursuing excellence on the court, in the classroom, and in the community.”

Junior Womens’ Basketball Sara Lundqvist, Major: Business

“We have volunteered in two different events this year with our basketball team. We volunteered for the food bank and for Saturday Sports. Saturday sports is a sporting event for kids in elementary school where we hang out with them and play basketball. I loved both of my experiences. What I enjoyed the most was to see what an impact or change I could make for other people. With the food bank we were able to help pack food packages for families who needed it. With the kids it was to see how happy they all were to have us all there and the interactions I had with all of them.”

“It feels great to be a part of a team that gives back. We want to be relentless on the court, in the classroom, and in the community. It is the least we can do. I know how much it meant to me when I was a kid having college athletes come to talk and play basketball with me. They made a difference in my life, and I hope we do the same for the kids in Saturday Sports.”

What Are Some Ways You Can Spice up Your Ramen Noodles?

Here are Some Recipes from TikTok and more!

Ramen noodles are the stereotypical college student meal. However, that does not mean that ramen has to be boring and flavorless. For those that love ramen noodles, and want to “up” their ramen noodle game, here are some great ramen noodle recipes!

Easy Peasy Pan’s Fried & Spicy Noodles

Ingredients:

  • 1 pack of Ramen noodles
  • 1 Tbsp of butter
  • 1 clove of garlic
  • 1 egg
  • 1 Tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 Tbsp of soy sauce
  • ½ Tbsp of chili flakes (can be left out if desired)
  • 1 to 2 Tbsp of water
  • Spring onion for topping

Instructions:

  1. Boil your ramen noodles, but make sure to not overcook them. Once cooked, drain them and set them aside for later.
  2. In a pan, melt some butter and add your chopped garlic clove.
  3. Once the clove has cooked for some time, add your soy sauce and chili pepper flakes. Keep stirring continuously.
  4. Stir in the brown sugar to your pan and add a bit of water.
  5. Add your ramen noodles to the pan and stir them into the sauce.
  6. Crack an egg and cook it next to the ramen, but do not mix them yet. Once the egg has begun to cook, stir it into the ramen and finish cooking.
  7. Plate your ramen and add spring onion or bagel seasoning as a garnish.

Simply Mamá Cook’s leftover Birria Ramen

Ingredients:

  • 4 to 5 cups of Birria broth
  • 1 ear of corn
  • 1 Jalapeno
  • 2 packs of ramen noodles
  • Chopped onion (for garnish)
  • Chopped Cilantro (for garnish)
  • Fresh lime (for garnish)

Instructions:

  1. Place leftover birria in a pot and let it cook on medium heat.
  2.  Once the birria has simmered, add your corn and jalapeno.
  3. After your corn has cooked, add your ramen noodle packets.
  4. Allow your noodles to boil and once that is done, plate them with some broth and add the garnishes.

Cooking Haru’s Cheese and Egg Ramen

Ingredients:

  • 1 ramen package
  • 1 slice of cheese (any kind is fine)
  • 1 egg
  • Around 300 ml of water or a little over 1 cup
  • 2 sausages
  • 2 tablespoons of fresh mushroom
  • A small bundle of chives

Instructions:

  1. Cut your sausages, chives, and mushrooms into small pieces.
  2. Boil some water and once it is ready, pour your hot water over your noodles in a heat-resistant bowl.
  3. Add your seasoning mix, sausage, and mushrooms to the hot ramen. Cover the bowl and place it in the microwave for 1 minute.
  4. Take out your ramen and stir everything together.
  5. Burrow a space in the middle of your ramen and place an egg inside it. Once done, place your bowl back into the microwave for 2 to 2.5 minutes.
  6. Take out your ramen, place a cheese slice while it is still warm, mix everything together, and enjoy!

Now, what is an FPU student’s take on spicing up ramen noodles? In John Russel Laforteza’s case, he likes to make his ramen noodles healthier by adding some protein and vegetables. The type of ingredients he uses depends on what he is craving, but here is an example!

John Russel Laforteza’s ramen noodles

Ingredients:

  • 1 pack of ramen noodles
  • 1 cup of broccoli
  • 2 tablespoons of bok choy
  • 1 egg
  • 1 can of spam meat

Instructions:

  1. Boil your ramen along with the seasoning packet.
  2. Once cooked, add your broccoli, spam, and bok choy.
  3. Let the vegetables cook for a bit and once that is done, add your egg.
  4. Let your egg cook until it is poached and when that happens, your meal is ready to plate and eat!
