As a Syrinx editor, you receive a Pacific Publication Award or Pacific Multimedia Award scholarship and earn Journalism Practicum units. As a copy editor, you save people from their own writing. You like to get technical. You are responsible for the accuracy of the text. You dispassionately edit newspaper articles at the sentence level, making sure that the content is free of mechanical, grammatical, factual, and style errors. (For example, you would slaughter that Oxford comma in the last sentence). You love details and like things to be right. You are willing to learn & enforce AP style. You are indispensable to the success of the newspaper, yet you don’t necessarily desire the spotlight. You attend twice weekly meetings and contribute to editorial writing on occasion.
The Opinions section is where student voice and community issues often find their most direct expression. Your job as Opinions editor is to foster a diverse array of campus voices in the student newspaper. Your duties include:
As the Social Media Editor, you oversee all social media and web content for The Syrinx (currently, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and the website). You design and implement social media practices that expand The Syrinx audience, engage with current audiences in new ways, and intersect with our print content in effective ways. The Social Media Editor delegates social media assignments and trains writers and other editors on best practices. Your responsibilities include: managing and updating the website using Squarespace and Issuu; growing the number of followers and engagements The Syrinx has on social media; determining and maintaining a social media workflow and schedule that integrates with current print workflow. You communicate clearly and consistently both face-to-face and on Slack. You collaborate with section editors, the photo editor, and the graphics editor regularly as well as consulting with the EIC regularly to discuss social media strategy. You attend twice weekly meetings.
As the Graphics Editor, you are a visual storyteller that shapes the overall aesthetic of The Syrinx. You help set and maintain the graphic standards and practices of the paper. You have experience as a graphic designer and possess at least some working knowledge of InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop (and are willing to develop these skills further). You collaborate with section editors to create compelling original graphics that help to tell the story. In collaboration with the EIC and other editors, you develop reoccurring graphic elements including the front cover, the movie mashup, and the monthly calendar. As needed, you create original artwork and organize contributions from guest artists. Other duties include: attending twice weekly meetings and communicating with the team in a clear and consistent manner face-to-face and on Slack.
As the Photo Editor, you are the primary photographer and visual storyteller of The Syrinx. You are responsible for capturing, collecting and correcting digital images for print and web as requested by various editors and writers. The Photo Editor must negotiate and give artistic and practical input to all photo art requests in order to ensure that the appropriate ideas are communicated through the images. You must also have prior experience or be willing to work with Adobe Photoshop in order to make corrections and edits to the photographs before they go to print or web. The Photo Editor strives to communicate clearly and consistently with section editors both face-to-face and on Slack in order to complete requests in a timely manner. You attend twice weekly meetings.
