Corrections for Volume 32 Issue 5 (February 11, 2017)

  • In the Jan. 30 issue of The Syrinx, an article in the Opinions section titled “Response to petition for FPU to be sanctuary campus” used the phrase “illegal aliens” to refer to people living in the United States illegally. We regret the use of this phrase. The Syrinx adheres to AP Style, which instructs to use the word “illegal” only to refer to an action, not a person (except in direct quotes which are essential to the story). The statement in the article, which read, “it is baffling to me that this statement would ask the FPU administration to “publicly pledge” their refusal to uphold U.S. law, becoming a sanctuary for illegal aliens” should have read, “it is baffling to me that this statement would ask the FPU administration to “publicly pledge” their refusal to uphold U.S. law, becoming a sanctuary for people who are living here illegally.”
